Keith welcomes Kent wind turbine factory plans

19 October 2011

I was pleased to read recently in the national press that Vestas propose to create a wind turbine factory in Sheerness. I would like to welcome Vestas’ plans. They are not only a positive step forward for our environment in the South East, but also good news for our economy as they could provide up to 2,000 much-needed local jobs.

I was involved in campaigning to save the Vestas factory in the Isle of Wight back in 2009, which was forced to close due to a lack of government subsidies. Now, just two years on, the progress that this company has made is remarkable, and the proposed new factory could be built within a year. Renewable energy, such as wind, contributes to our short-term reduction targets to prevent runaway climate change, they are safe – unlike nuclear power, and they provide local jobs. I will continue to fight for ambitious EU renewable energy targets which will support this move towards a greener future.
