Brighton Odeon Under Pressure To Screen Climate Film

13 March 2009

Green Euro-MP Caroline Lucas has joined a campaign to ask Brighton's Odeon cinemas to show the ground-breaking film about climate change ‘The Age of Stupid'.

The film stars Oscar nominee Pete Postlethwaite (In The Name of the Father, Brassed Off) as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, looking back at "archive" footage from 2007 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?

In a world first, the film will be premiered at 64 locations this weekend - but, ironically, anyone living in Brighton wanting to see it will have to contribute to climate change themselves by travelling to Crawley or London to do so.

Brighton's Green Party Euro-MP Caroline Lucas, who hosted a special screening of the film for fellow MEP's from across Europe last month, said she was amazed that residents of one of the ‘greenest' cities in the UK wouldn't get a chance to see the film locally until she herself hosts a screening at the Duke of York's cinema on May 7th.

"The Age of Stupid is an incredible film," she said. "But it isn't just great entertainment - it contains an important message too.

"Unless we act now, urgently, to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions which are fuelling climate change, the human costs will be terrible - and our children and grandchildren will neither understand, nor forgive, our stupidity."
