Media training: how to be a Comms star for the Green Party

Communicating the Green Party's work and values through conventional and social media is vital if we want to win electoral success and change things for the better. We have a team of press officers, social media officers and communicators across the South East who carry out this vital work.

This intensive training day aims to help you get the most out of your role and achieve your goals. We are very fortunate to have Caroline Lucas's Press Officer, Matthew Butcher, and Joanna Kindeberg, the Green Party's national social media officer to provide the training we need.

Participants will receive:

  • Help writing press releases
  • Tactics for getting in the paper or online media
  • How to do an interview (or advise others - eg candidates - on how to do it)
  • How to brief candidates
  • What makes for a good local party spokesperson
  • How to integrate your press and social media work
  • How to use Twitter effectively
  • How to make the most of Facebook

One to one sessions will be on offer to allow practical experience in interview technique. Even if you don't do interviews yourself it will help you advise and train up those in your local party who do. We will also be asking you to bring along your press releases to review and help advise on your local party's Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.

About the trainers:

Matthew is a press officer for Caroline Lucas. He previously worked on the general election and European election campaigns. He also worked for Green MEP Keith Taylor and for campaigning group ShareAction.

Joanna manages the Green Party’s social media, working with press and campaigns teams to maximise impact through digital channels.  She has a degree in Media and Communications, an MA diploma in Digital Platforms and Social Media Strategies and a certificate in Advanced Social Media from CIPR. Her digital communications roles include, most recently, developing the social media strategy for Goldsmiths, University of London.

The day will be facilitated by Emma Leigh, South East Regional co-ordinator
