Martha James

Martha JamesNational party experience

I have served on the Green Party Executive Committee as Policy Coordinator and as the convenor of the Built Environment Policy Working group, writing policy with internal and external bodies.

Local party experience

I have been active in three local parties since joining the Green Party 30 years ago, initially in Colchester, then Haringey, and for the last twenty years on the Isle of Wight. I have worked hard behind the scenes supporting our local candidates and helped the Isle of Wight to become a target parliamentary seat.

My approach

At this moment in history, now that the climate crisis has finally reached the mass media, our party is at its most critical stage. We have a real opportunity to turn something scientists have been talking about into political action.

Apart from the climate emergency, we also need to lead on the other critically important issues related to the ecological collapse, such as biodiversity, exacerbated by rising sea levels reducing available habitats.

I have been an activist my entire life, involved in the campaigns against the M11 Link Road, the road at Twyford Down, against racism, and to Reclaim the Streets. More recently, I have campaigned for a People's Vote on Brexit and for Extinction Rebellion.

Improvements to the running of the party

As a representative on GPRC, I would push to prioritise fixing the members' website. Green Spaces is unwieldy, leading to a lack of internal democracy.
I want also want to see our conferences reach a wider demographic, providing means to enable more members to participate in decisions and policy making without the need to attend.

I will consult with you, members of the SE Region Green Party, on important issues arising and anything you wish me to raise. I will report back regularly.
